CORYDON COLLIES

I have just put a photo of Taz (CORYDON THE RINGLEADER) onto his page in this site. He is growing into probably the most beautiful animal I have ever seen. He is now 10 months old.

The end of another year of showing. A year that produced mixed results but I think also anther breed record. I cannot think of any other kennel breeding five different puppies who won Best Puppy awards at Championship Shows in any one year. These were CORYDON BLUE FIZZ Best Puppy in the breed at Crufts. CORYDON THE RINGLEADER. Best Puppy at the Yorkshire Collie Club Championship Show. His litter sister CORYDON FEMME FATALE FOR MEJOLA won Best Puppy at Richmond Championship Show. CORYDON DARK VICTRESS Won Best Puppy in Show at the Smooth Collie Club of Great Britain Ch Show, and her litter sister CORYDON VICTORIANA AT DEMELEWIS  won Best Puppy at Midland Counties Ch Show. This is really an amazing record.

An update to the show where Percy was Best of Breed. This was the Helsinki Winners Show, so he adds this to his vast array of titles. He won this award in 2012 which means that he has now won this award twice. Most rewarding. He evidently gets another title from this show as he was Best Veteran as well. I wonder how many veterans win the HEW title? Anyway his list of titles is now too long to put on one line on his page in this site. All good fun.

An email from Finland to say that Percy (INT CH CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN) won Best of Breed and Group 4 at the last big show of the year. He ended the year at No. 19 in the All Breeds order of Merit and No2 in the Pastoral Group. For the first time ever a Rough Collie has beaten the Smooth Collies in this list. For the second time he is Finland’s Top Rough Collie for the year. And he did this while a veteran of 7 years of age. A pity the UK judges could not appreciate his qualities when he was shown over here for the first 5 years of his life.

Last two shows of the year bring mixed results. Lincoln Canine Society was the last show held on the 7th December. CORYDON RIFFSON won Best Puppy and then Reserve Best of Breed. He was placed third in the Puppy Group.

Collie Association Ch Show on the 30th November we took just 2 puppies as the elected judges were not to our liking. CORYDON RIFFSON was placed third in Minor Puppy Dog so qualified for Crufts. He also won the Novice Dog Class. His sister CORYDON MOONFLOWER (Florry)was unplaced in Minor Puppy Bitch. Strange as her photo on her page in this site was taken at this show. Those placed in this class must have been unbelievably good ???? Anyway I think she is rather nice.

Still very quiet on the show front, but Maxine and Jo did us proud at the Midland Counties Championship Show last Friday 24th October when Maxine’s CORYDON VICTORIANA AT DEMELEWIS won the Minor Puppy Bitch Class and was later awarded Best Puppy in the Breed. The fifth Corydon Puppy to win such an award this year. A record for us. And Jo White’s CORYDON FEMME FATALE FOR MEJOLA was placed second in this big class. Miranda had a works course that day. So not entered. Not to be completely outdone Percy had yet another Best of Breed and Group 1 at a big International Show in Finland at the weekend. Presumably he will rise up the league table with this win.

Today the 17th October we received from The Kennel Club the Stud Book Numbers for CORYDON SPOT THE DRIFFERENCE and CORYDON THE RINGLEADER. Not too strange, but a first time for us, they have consecutive numbers. Both qualified at the Yorkshire Collie Club Championship Show in August. Presumably they were the only dogs to qualify at this show. Proving that it is more difficult for a dog to get into the Stud Book nowadays. For the record CORYDON SPOT THE DRIFFERENCE’S is 2889CZ and CORYDON THE RINGLEADER’S is 2890CZ.

Very quiet period with no shows and no puppies. But an Email from Finland to say that Percy INT CH CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN is now at No 27 in the list of All Breeds results in Finland for the year. He is currently at No 2 in the Herding Group and for the first time ever a Rough Collie is above a Smooth Collie in this list. Not bad for a dog who is now a veteran.

Sunday 14th September we took yet another new puppy for it’s first show. This was CORYDON DARK VICTRESS and the Show was The Smooth Collie Club of Great Britain’s Championship Show. No Challenge Certificates for Roughs. The Judge for Roughs was Minna Manninen from Finland. Vicki as she is known here won the Puppy Bitch Class, beat her Kennel Mate for Best Puppy in the Breed, then under the Best in Show Judge, Stella Clark she was awarded Best Puppy in Show. Her kennel mate was the hero from a fortnight ago CORYDON THE RINGLEADER who won the Puppy Dog Class.

Saturday 6th September was Richmond Ch Show. Jeff Luscott was the judge. All our dogs are now out of coat. But Miranda took CORYDON THE PERSUADER as she wanted to try and get a Stud Book number for him. He would have to be placed in the first three in the Open Dog Class to achieve this. Unfortunately when I bathed him the day before, the blower removed every last bit of his undercoat so it was more by hope than expectation that he would achieve what was wanted. However he duly did this by coming third in this class. He has a very prominent white blaze which does not find favour among the specialist judges, but Miranda was hoping that Mr Luscott, an all rounder judge would not be so biased. Dennis as he is known here will probably never be shown again, this being his first and most likely last Championship Show. But here he had not finished as his daughter CORYDON FEMME FATALE FOR MEJOLA was placed first in the Minor Puppy Bitch Class and was then awarded Best Puppy in Breed. As she is litter sister to our CORYDON THE RINGLEADER it means that his offspring won Best Puppy at consecutive shows. And he still had not finished as his older daughter MEJOLA MAID TO PERSUADE won the Junior Bitch Class. She is litter sister to MEJOLA I AM PERSUASIVE who won the Dog CC under me at The East Anglian Collie Association Show on the 3rd August. He has also won his Junior Warrant. Dennis has so far sired just 2 litters, but there are so many winners from these. Another daughter from the younger litter was awarded Best Puppy in the breed at a recent club show in Denmark. Just think, he could be useful in improving those bitches we call Chowlies. You can see what he looks like on his page in the Boys section on this site. He is by INT CH CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN who, I believe, is now the biggest winning Rough Collie ever in Finland.

Sunday 31st August was Yorkshire Collie Club’s Championship Show. Dog judge was Thomas Rohlin from Denmark. DEMELEWIS CATCH THE BLUES FOR CORYDON was placed 3rd in Open Dog. He had lost most of his coat. CORYDON SPOT THE DRIFFERENCE won the Limit Dog Class, he was really out of coat. But this win means he has qualified for The Kennel Club Studbook. The real surprise was our new dog puppy at his very first show. Aged just 6 months and 24 days. CORYDON THE RINGLEADER. He won the Minor Puppy Dog Class, the Maiden Dog Class and the Novice Dog Class. In the Challenge for the top honours he was awarded the Reserve Challenge Certificate. He then won the challenge for Reserve Best in Show. He must be the youngest ever Rough Collie Dog to win such a high award in the UK. He was also awarded Best Puppy in Show. With this win he also won his way into The Kennel Club Stud Book. There were over 130 Rough Collies entered at this show. Several were Champions. This win meant that at the last 3 shows we have attended our dogs have won 4 Reserve CCs  with 3 different exhibits.

A phone call from his delighted owner, Elizabeth Ballington. CORYDON VICTORIOUS won his first CC and then Best of Breed at his first show. Held on the 24/8/2014. He was born on the 11/2/2014. So he was just 6 months and 13 days old. Beat that!!!

I have added 2 new articles onto the Collie Data pages. I think that they are important. They are very long, but if anybody cares to read them I would be very interested in any feedback.

After a long time away from showing in the UK Miranda went to the Welsh Kennel Club Show on the 16th August. The judge was the well known All Rounder Andrew Brace. CORYDON CATCH A PIXIE was placed third in the Open Bitch Class. She was feeling a little travel weary as she had been journeying for 11 days. DEMELEWIS CATCH THE BLUES FOR CORYDON won the Open Dog Class and was awarded yet another Reserve CC, his fourth. A slippery floor did not help, but he beat 2 big Champions on the day. CORYDON PERSNICKETY MISS won the Limit Bitch Class and was awarded the Reserve CC. Her first, and this was her first show for 18 months. She is still only 2 years old. Jo White took her 6 month old bitch puppy CORYDON FEMME FATALE FOR MEJOLA and won the Minor Puppy Bitch Class. Maxine took her even younger CORYDON VICTORIAN FOR DEMELEWIS and she was placed third in this Class of 9. So the day ended with a Reserve CC double for Corydon and 2 very young bitch puppies bred here winning their Crufts qualification.

I have spent the last 3 years trying to write a book about the Corydon Kennel, but it is taking rather too long and as I want to write articles about the breed. Mostly to help newcomers to the breed and dog show scene I have decided to rebirth a broadsheet I published in the 1980’s and 90’s. I called it COLLIE DATA. I am now going to resurrect it on a link from this page. I thought that Face Book would be the right place for it, but I have now realised that this is just a gossip column, mainly for the ladies.

10th August Miranda showed CORYDON CATCH A PIXIE at the World Dog Show. She was placed 3rd in the Open Bitch Class of 28.

After a long pause on the show scene front I judged the dogs at the East Anglian Collie Association Championship Show on the 3rd August.

6th July and INT CH CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN had another big win with a Best of Breed Group 1 and Best in Show 2. This follows a period of not very much happening on the show front as all seem to have lost coats or the judges have not been viewed with too much favour for us to enter under them.

6th June was Three Counties. Maxine took DEMELEWIS CATCH THE BLUES FOR CORYDON who won the Open Dog Class and was awarded the Reserve CC (his third) and MEJOLA MY BLUE HEAVEN FOR CORYDON who was placed Reserve in the Limit Bitch Class. But she has dropped her coat big time.

29th May Miranda and I went to Denmark for 2 shows on the same Show ground with the same Danish Collie Club. The first on the 31st May was judged by Mrs Erlich from South Africa. We took 2 to show. CH CORYDON ONCE IN A BLUE MOON and MEJOLA MY BLUE HEAVEN FOR CORYDON They each won a Reserve CC. The next day the show was judged by Mary Wells from the USA. They each won a CC. But here is the difference from the UK. Ross was No. 4 Best Dog while Heather was No 2 Best bitch. As the others placed over our 2 were already Danish Champions the CC was passed down to the highest placed dog or bitch who were not Danish Champions. Makes for much easier Champions, but does not reduce the quality as most of those on show were generally better than the Rough Collies in the UK. The Best in Show winner on the second day was one of the best bitches I have ever seen. Far superior to any of the Champion bitches I have seen in the UK for a very long time. What are they doing right? And what are we doing wrong? Only 30 Rough Collies present but as the population in Denmark is about 8% of the UK this would be equivalent to an entry of over 400 in this country. Not only that, but the general atmosphere at the show was very friendly and relaxed. A lesson here for the dog shows in the UK where generally the atmosphere is very far from friendly. Maybe we should have overseas judges as then we would not get so much face judging which is so prevalent today. Rare indeed for a class of Rough Collies to be placed in order of merit in the UK. Having shown under and watched several judges from the USA I have to say that they are the very best. Mary Wells was no exception. She described my 2 Collies perfectly describing their good points and their bad. I cannot think of any judge from the UK, specialist or all rounder who could do this so well.

More wins this weekend as INT CH CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN won the CACIB and Best of Breed in Norway. To add to his long list of Champion Titles he is now a Nordic Champion. This is a first for one of our dogs.

It keeps on happening even when there are no shows for us. CORYDON MOONSHINE is now German Youth Champion. He has done this in just 3 shows. Once again he was Best Youngster in Show. This time it was Club Show at Wiesental on the 18th May where the judge was Mark Wibier. He is Corydon Champion No.77. The Junior Bitch winner was also by Riff. A Corydon Persuader son was Best Puppy in Show at Loughborough on the 17th May. This was Jo White’s MEJOLA I AM PERSUASIVE who is out of Corydon Maid For Mejola. Last but not least INT CH CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN won yet another Best of Breed award, this time he was also Group 2.

What a weekend the 10th & 11th May. First it was Percy (INT C CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN) winning yet another CACIC and Best of Breed at Helsinki. Not only that, but his son won the Reserve CACIB and Reserve Best Dog. His daughter (litter sister to dog) won the Bitch CACIB. I call this a clean sweep. The next day Percy won yet another CACIB. CORYDON MOONSHINE who went to Germany as a puppy, he is litter brother to our Fizzy, won the European Junior Dog Title in Dortmund. A son of DK CH WW10 CORYDON DESIRE ME won the CAC in Denmark and is now a Danish Champion. Miranda took 3 to the National. DEMELEWIS CATCH THE BLUES FOR CORYDON won the Open Dog Class. CORYDON BLUE FIZZ won the Junior Bitch Class on her first birthday, and her dam MEJOLA MY BLUE HEAVEN FOR CORYDON was placed third in the Open Bitch Class. Reserve in this Class was CORYDON LA FAYVORITA AVEC KARAFAYE shCM and VHC was her litter sister CORYDON LA CAPRITA OF PHREELANCER. Unusual to have three placed in the top bitch class. It did not end there because a Riff daughter in Switzerland won the CACIB. She is a blue merle daughter of the bitch who came over from Switzerland last year to be mated to Riff.

It is official, CORYDON BLUE FIZZ has now won the 25 points necessary to be awarded the Junior Warrant which is now confirmed by The Kennel Club. She therefore has the letters JW after her name. She will be given a stud book number as well. With this she has now qualified for Crufts Dog Show for life.

Very many thanks to Kevin Brannigan for our new logo.

Sunday 27th April INT C CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN Best in Show at International Show in Finland. A first for a Rough Collie in Finland. We gave him away to our friends in Finland 2 years ago because he could not win in the UK. Why???????. He regularly defeats a blue merle bitch who came to the UK and won about 20 CCs, won at least one Group and a Best in Show all Breeds. Are the UK judges that incompetent or are the judges in other countries better trained? He won Best in Show at The Smooth Collie Club’s Championship Show under an American judge when he was a puppy. She claimed that he was the only correct Collie at the show. Go to this link to see a Rough Collie really move. Awesome, Should be required viewing for all aspiring judges, breeders and exhibitors.

Saturday 19th April was the Working & Pastoral Breeds of Wales with Bev White judging. CORYDON BLUE FIZZ First Puppy Bitch and first Junior Bitch. These win qualify her for the Junior Warrant. Her dam MEJOLA MY BLUE HEAVEN FOR CORYDON First Limit Bitch. Bitch Challenge Certificate and then Best of Breed. What a day.

Sunday 23rd February was Retford All Breed Open Show. CORYDON BLUE FIZZ was placed First in the Breed Puppy Class, First in the Pastoral Puppy Group and then Reserve Best Puppy in Show.

We are currently the proud owners of 14 puppies from 2 litters born in early February. To read all about them go to the Puppies Page.

Following our success at Crufts Dog Show I have put new pictures of our youngest male CORYDON FOLLOW MY LEAD. I think he looks rather nice. He is by our Corydon The Persuader who though he is unlikely to be shown much because he has a white blaze, is never the less producing outstanding puppies.

Crufts Dog Show was held on the 6th March. Great success for us here as CORYDON BLUE FIZZ won the Puppy Bitch Class and then won Best Puppy in the Breed. 8 years after her sire won the same award.

Bitch judge was Stella Clark. The dog judge was Ann Hassock. Both judges were in agreement that Fizzy should be best puppy. Her dam MEJOLA MY BLUE HEAVEN FOR CORYDON was placed Reserve in the Limit Bitch Class. She still needs more coat for showing.

2 Shows in 5 days. First was British Collie Club Championship Show on the 1st March with Mr B Makepeace judging the bitches. CORYDON BLUE FIZZ won the Puppy Bitch Class. For this she won a very big, very old silver punch bowl. Miranda brought it home and found that it was in a filthy state. Some hard work with the silver polish brought it up to really shine. Why was it returned to the show in such a dirty condition? Do people have no pride in what their dogs have won? I think that it is absolutely disgusting that club trophies are returned in a filthy condition. No excuse for this at all. I can only wonder at the condition of the house that it came from. This trophy is big and heavy. Must be worth hundreds of pounds, so it needs to be looked after.

Just heard that INT CH CORYDON MONAMIA has now added the title of Baltic Champion to her list of Champion titles. She is the litter sister of INT CH CORYDON CATCH ME DRIFTIN who has taken Finland by storm since he went over there almost 2 years ago. His latest win is  Best of Breed, Group 1 and Best in Show 3 at a big International Show in Finland. They have both started the year very well.

The start of a new year. No shows yet. Mud up to our eyeballs.

We have a new sable dog we call him Josh and his registered name is CORYDON FOLLOW MY LEAD. He at 3.5 months looks very nice. I hope he keeps coming on. He has his own page where I have gone to town a bit as I have put a 10 generation pedigree on the page. Also I have put his sire line and dam line from the very beginning. Makes interesting reading for students of the breed.
